Villagrana leads Tritons to Exciting Win in Season Opener
Pacifica Christian Girls Basketball opened up the 2024-2025 campaign with a comeback win against Lakewood High School on Wednesday evening. Down 17-25 at halftime, the Tritons came back to beat the Knights 49-48 in the final seconds of the game, making a statement to start the season.
Junior Vivian Villagrana was the star of the show in the Triton Event Center as she had 32 points, including seven three-pointers, scoring 65% of the points for the Tritons. She was unstoppable from outside the arc, making it extremely difficult for the visiting Knights to guard her. Freshman KK Burrus got her first minutes on the high school court tonight, including her first three-pointer in the third quarter. Kassandra Aguinga and Angie Martinez both had four points while Caylie Villagrana added three. Martinez had 12 rebounds and four blocks on defense for the Orange and Navy. With multiple girls in foul trouble early on, Head Coach Pablo Martinez had to rely on his young bench to step up and rise to the occasion, which they did. The Tritons combined for 32 points in the second half outscoring the Knights as they only had 23.
Head Coach Pablo Martinez said "The girls battled tonight! We had several key players in foul trouble but we stuck together and the bench gave us quality minutes, making it a great team win to start out the season. Vivian was sensational tonight!!!"
The Tritons will face Elsinore High School (1-1) on Friday at 5:30 pm at the Vanguard University Freed Center for Pacifica Christian's annual Bring the Rain Game.
