First Annual Surf Team Showdown
On a cool November morning at Tower 74 in Newport Beach, Pacifica Christian High School made waves—literally—with its first-ever Surf Team Showdown. Over 100 students, parents, teachers, and coaches gathered along the sand for a morning full of competition, laughter, and community. Organized by the school’s surf team, the event was part friendly competition and part joyful chaos, perfectly embodying the spirit of Pacifica’s tight-knit culture.
The day kicked off with three lively heats, each more entertaining than the last. The first two heats saw students, teachers, and coaches going head-to-head in a series of lighthearted but competitive matchups. Cheers and laughter erupted from the beach as Tripp popped an air and Coach David had several long rides creating an unforgettable moment that blurred the line between athlete and mentor.
But it was the final heat that truly stole the show—the “Anything But a Surfboard” contest. Competitors paddled out on everything from inflatable dinosaurs and Santa’s sleds to giant Cheez-It boxes and even a five-person surfboard. The creativity and enthusiasm were unmatched, as both students and adults embraced the silliness of the moment, proving that surfing isn’t just about skill—it’s about joy, imagination, and community.
By the end of the event, one thing was clear: the Pacifica Christian Surf Team had created more than just a surf contest—they had sparked a new tradition. The Surf Team Showdown wasn’t about trophies or titles (well, for most of us atleast); it was about connection, laughter, and celebrating the unique spirit of the Pacifica community. As the crowd packed up and the tide rolled in, there was already a buzz about next year’s event—bigger, splashier, and just as full of heart.
