Pacifica Christian High School Athletics

Surf 2023-2024 Season Outlook

The surf team makes their return to the water for the first time in a few years as an official team and is the only program that overlaps seasons.  The squad is led by Head Coach David and Amy Nehrig who have years of experience out on the water. The Pacifica Christian Surf Team just recently joined the Sunset Surf League where they compete against multiple local high schools such as Edison, Huntington Beach, and Newport Harbor.

When asked about the upcoming season, Nehrig remarked, "We are so excited to have the privilege of joining the Sunset League and surfing against some of the best surf teams in the nation. With only three seniors, our team is young and full of potential. This group of athletes has been committed to the early morning practices and continually improving. Their cohesiveness as a team and positivity in the water makes them a light in the community we surf with each morning."

Players to watch out on the water this season include Sophomore Tripp Nehrig, as well as Seniors Jackson Grizel and Bob Nehrig. Tripp continues to be a dominant force competing at Pacifica and at an elite competitive level. In the off-season, he placed top 4 overall in the Under 18 CCSA Summer Series. We are excited for him to bring his talent and competitive experience to the team. Tripp was the driving force in bringing Surf Team back to Pacifica. Senior Jackson Grizel brings exceptional leadership to the team. His improvement in heat strategy and wave knowledge will help him succeed this year and be an asset to the team. Senior Bob Nehrig demonstrates the heart and hard work ethic to the team. Bob is a leader, organizer, and mentor to many of the lower classmen. Bob's strengths lie not only in the water but in keeping the team focused and ready to win.

The team has over 30 kids in the program and is made up of both boys and girls. The squad competes down at either Huntington Beach or Newport Beach in the mornings. There are four seniors on the team.
