Boys Volleyball Shows Well in Portola Showcase
Pacifica Christian Boys Volleyball kicked off its 2023 season this past Saturday, reaching the semi-finals and winning three out of four games in the Portola Boys Volleyball Showcase.
The Tritons started the day taking on the Cougars of Beaumont High School. With an 8:00 am first serve, the Orange and Navy came out hot, defeating Beaumont with ease, 25-12 and 25-17. Heading into the second game the squad faced Bolsa Grande High School, the defending Garden Grove League Champions who also went 23-4 last season and reached the CIF-SS Division 4 Quarterfinals. The first set started off slow for the Tritons, but the team eventually pulled away to win the first set 25-22. Heading into the second set the Tritons went on a huge run to secure the victory 25-11 and finished first in pool play.
"The boys crushed it!" said first-year head coach Evan Fredericks. "It was a good win for our program this early in the season and a great day of volleyball. Very proud of the guys."
The Tritons would go on to defeat the Lancers of Sunny Hills High School, the defending CIF-SS Division 5 Champions, 25-23, 24-26, 16-14 to reach the Semi-Finals. In the semi-final game, the Orange and Navy faced old cross-town rival Marina High School from Huntington Beach. In what was a close back-and-forth matchup that ended in Marina's favor 24-26, 23-25.
The squad was led by seniors Christian Hahne and Matthew MacPherson. In the last two games, Hahne had 20 kills and MacPherson had 19. Sophomore Hudson Reynolds also added to the stat sheet with 14 kills in the last two games. The team had 96 kills, 16 blocks, and seven aces on the weekend. Middle blockers Austin Brinker and Junior Spence Richards combined for four blocks.
The Tritons are back in action on Tuesday, February 28 when they travel to Magnolia Science Academy. The first serve is set for 4:00pm.
