Boys Volleyball Defeats CVCS for First League Win

Boys Volleyball improves to 8-1 on the year, 1-0 in San Joaquin League play, as they defeated local rivals Capistrano Valley Christian 3-1 Thursday Night in the Triton Event Center. The Tritons came out of the gate a bit slow. Being shorthanded by the absences of seniors Will Carlson and Bryan Wang, it took some time for the squad to adjust. After going down 9-15 in the first set, first-year Coach Evan Fredericks called a time-out, hoping to slow down the game and get the boys refocused.

"We were just a few plays away from blowing the game wide open," said Coach Fredericks. "We were missing our big middle and two starting liberos, so we just needed to settle into the game, and that time out helped us do that."

The time-out proved to be just what the Orange and Navy needed. After trailing 9-15 the Tritons went on an 8-1 run before CVCS called a time-out, trying to do the same thing the Tritons did earlier in the set but it did not work. Coming out of the time out CVCS would only score six more points before the Orange and Navy would eventually carry the set 25-22. (Tritons went on a 16-7 run in the second half of the first set to secure the victory)  The second set was nothing like the first as the Tritons jumped all over CVCS early, cruising to a 25-15 victory in the second set. The squad would drop the third set, 18-25, but bounce back quickly in the fourth set in dominating fashion, 25-13, to win the day.

"Christian Hahne and Matthew MacPherson were great today and Caleb Unkrich filled in and played starting libero and crushed it" said coach Fredericks. "The boys came ready to play. It's the best volleyball we have played all season."

The Tritons are back in action this coming Saturday, March 11, when they travel to Cerritos to take on the Warriors of Valley Christian. First serve is set for 5:15 pm.
