Silent Night 2023
One of Pacifica Christian's Triton Traditions was back Friday, December 8th in the Triton Event Center, this time it was silent. Starting back in 2017, Silent Night has become a pivotal Triton Tradition within the basketball programs. Everyone in the audience dressed in their best Christmas attire enters the Triton Event Center without making a peep until Pacifica Christian reaches seven points. Once the seventh point is good, all in attendance cheer as loud as they can. To finish it off, in between the first and second quarters, the crowd sings "Silent Night" together as a family.
Coming off their first loss of the season to St. Margarets on Wednesday, Girls Basketball was looking to bounce back and refocus. The Tritons who just came out ranked fifth in Division 2A took on Edison High School as part of the Pacifica Mariner Mayhem Tournament. This was the second time these two teams had met this season, as they previously competed during the annual Bring the Rain Game where the Tritons beat the Chargers 42-25. Tonight was no different as the Orange and Navy beat the Chargers 50-37. Scoring more than half the points on the court was sophomore Vivian Villagrana who had 26 points, five of those being three-pointers. Villagrana was dominant in all areas this evening and was a crucial part of the Triton's success as she also currently leads the team in defensive rebounds. Caylie Villagrana added eight to the board while Lauryn Ham added seven. Caylie and Lauryn are the top two scorers for the Orange and Navy as Villagrana has 109 and Ham has 114 total points this year. "Tonight was a great bounce-back game for the girls after a tough loss on Wednesday." remarked Coach Martinez "The defensive intensity picked up in the fourth quarter and we were able to pull away to get the win."
The Orange and Navy improved to 10-1 while the Chargers dropped to 1-9. The Tritons are back at it tomorrow against Marina at 4:30 pm at Pacifica High School. The Marina Vikings are currently 5-2. These two teams have never met before.
In the second game of the evening, Boys Basketball hosted the Peninsula Panthers in the CDM Beach Bash. Entering the night, the Panthers were 2-5 while the Tritons were 5-3 and on a four-game winning streak, beating Bishop Montgomery, Long Beach Jordon, Orange Lutheran, and Foothill. This was the first time these two teams had met, and the Orange and Navy proved to be the more dominant team, beating the Panthers 72-29. After a low-scoring first half, the Tritons were only up 25-14, but the squad came out hot, scoring 47 points in the second half, and 29 in the third quarter. Leading the team was Logan Stewart who had his third double-double of the week with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Stewart leads the team in points scored this season with 111 total, as well as rebounds with 81. Owen Connell had 12 points while AJ Johnson had an additional 10. EJ Spillman continues to lead the team in assists as he had seven, totaling 49 on the season as well as seven points. "Tonight was a really good team effort by the guys." said Coach Berokoff "Every player was able to get into the game and each guy had an impact on winning."
The Tritons improved to 6-3 on the season, while the Panthers dropped to 2-6. The team is back in action tomorrow evening for one of their tougher matchups this season as they take on the Divison 1 JSerra Lions out of the Trinity League in the CDM Beach Bash. The Lions are currently undefeated, winning 10 games so far this season, and are ranked third in Division 1, second in Orange County, and sixth in the state. These two teams met last year in the same tournament where JSerra beat the Tritons 60-56. Both the Tritons and the Lions have played Foothill as a common opponent where the Tritons won 55-48 and the Lions won 69-29. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm at CDM High School.
