Boys Basketball Back to Back San Joaquin League Champs
For the first time in program history, Pacifica Christian Boys Basketball are back-to-back San Joaquin League Champions! During the 2022-2023 season, the Orange and Navy secured the San Joaquin League title after finishing the season with a 7-1 record. Last year, rival Fairmont Prep finished in second place after losing to Orangewood Academy in their final game of the season to finish 6-2. This year was no different. The Tritons who for the second time finished the season 7-1 in league play, secured the outright league title after beating Orangewood Academy 60-47 this past Wednesday. On the same night, San Gabriel Academy beat Fairmont Prep 55-54 in OT at the free throw line. The Fairmont Prep loss dropped the Huskies to 6-2 and secured the league title for the Tritons for the second year in a row.
Heading into Wednesday night's matchup against Orangewood Academy, the Tritons were in a must-win situation to have a shot at being co-champions with Fairmont Prep, assuming the Huskies were to beat San Gabriel Academy where both teams had the potential to finish at 7-1. Wednesday evening the Orange and Navy were led by Junior Logan Stewart who had 16 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Michael Noel who also dropped 16 points. Junior EJ Spillman had 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists while Alex Stewart had eight points and eight rebounds. The Tritons came out hot on Wednesday night, taking a commanding 34-19 at halftime against the visiting Spartans. This lead was cut down quickly as Orangewood knocked down 20 points in the third quarter, compared to the Tritons 10, leaving only a five-point lead for the Orange and Navy heading into the final quarter of the game. With a league title on the line, the Tritons took control of the game knocking down 16 points in the fourth quarter compared to the Spartan's eight points, securing the 60-47 victory.
"I am so proud of this group of young men this year." remarked Head Coach Jeff Berokoff "It's difficult to win our league as there are so many good players, teams, and coaches competing in it and it's a real special moment for our players and our school to be able to capture back-to-back outright league championships!"
The Tritons will host the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 Playoffs on Wednesday, February 7th. Brackets will be released on Sunday, February 4 at noon.
