2024 BSN Showcase
The fourth annual BSN Showcase was back in the Triton Event Center on Saturday, January 6th with some of the most exciting and competitive basketball games this event has ever seen with two out of four games going into overtime. Starting back in 2019, the BSN Showcase was designed to bring some of the local high school talent from all parts of California, as well as Nevada to a one-day showcase event. This year did not disappoint. Seven schools traveled down to Newport Beach, two of them coming across the state lines from Nevada.
Starting things off in the 3:30 pm game, Fresno Christian took on Centennial out of Bakersfield. The Centennial Golden Hawks who are now 12-5, came out hot, taking control of the game and never taking their foot off the gas. Leading the Golden Hawks was Senior Rippen Gill who had 27 points, earning himself the Mark Heller Player of the Game. Gill led the team to a commanding 85-45 win against the Fresno Christian Eagles.
In the 5:00 pm matchup, the Mojave Rattlers out of Nevada took on the Monterey Trail Mustangs from Elk Grove. The Rattlers were 10-5 and won the NIAA State Title last season while the Mustangs were 13-1 and on a four-game winning streak. This proved to be a very even matchup, and extremely exciting for all in attendance. After the third quarter, the Rattlers were up 51-47, but the Mustangs never gave up, as after regulation the game was all tied up at 68. Each team scored 11 points in the first round of overtime, including the final play by the Rattlers to tie it up. Down by two points with one second left, Mojave's Zaccarion Jackson was at the line, and missed the free throw, but it was CJ Shaw who jumped off the line to tip it in forcing a double overtime. In double overtime, Monterey Trail took the lead and never let the Rattlers back in, pulling away with a 93-87 victory. Brandon Gibson Jr. from Monterey Trail was the Mark Heller Player of the Game with 32 points for the Mustangs.
The excitement from the second game carried over to the 6:30 pm game as the host school of Pacifica Christian took on Modesto Christian. The Tritons entered the game 10-8 while the Crusaders were 10-1 and on an eight-game winning streak. Modesto Christian is ranked first in the CIF San Joaquin Section. The Crusaders came out on fire in the first quarter, draining six threes, and beating the Tritons 23-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Tritons battled back and cut the gap down to 34-28 at halftime. At the end of the third, it was all tied up at 47 a piece as each team scored 11 in the fourth, tying the game at 58 after the end of regulation. The Tritons dominated in overtime, only allowing three points from the Crusaders, compared to their 10 points, earning the victory with a final score of 68-61. Logan Stewart was the difference maker for the Orange and Navy, as he had 33 points, and 12 rebounds earning himself the Mark Heller Player of the Game. EJ Spillman had 13 points and six assists while Senior Alex Stewart had eight points and 12 rebounds. Junior Hudson Reynolds had eight points, nine rebounds, and five steals.
The fourth and final game was the Vanden Vikings against the Arbor View Aggies, both top-notch programs with talent on both ends of the ball. The Vikings were 9-5 entering the game while the Aggies were 10-5. Neither team led by a large margin the entire game, as after each quarter there was never more than a two-point difference. With under a minute left in the fourth quarter, Vanden was up by one point, but an unfortunate turnover by the Vikings gave the Aggies the ball back. It was Maximus Romeo from Arbor View who drove to the basket with only eight seconds left, to give the Aggies the go-ahead and win the game 58-57. San Diego State Commit Pharaoh Compton from Arbor View was the Mark Heller Player of the Game with 19 points.
"This year's BSN showcase proved once again to be one of the top showcases on the West Coast with some of the best high school teams participating, a double overtime game, an overtime game, and a game-winner with less than eight seconds left to play," said Head Coach Jeff Berokoff "With the incredible quality the TVX production group brings to the live stream, in the hospitality of our athletic department and the sponsors of our event, I believe our showcase is one of the top showcases in California."
This was an exciting day of high school basketball and we could not have done it without the support of all our sponsors and staff who helped put on such a successful event! We look forward to hosting our fifth BSN Showcase next year in 2025!
