Tritons go 3-1 at Lions Baseball Tournament
Baseball had a busy week this week as they competed down in San Diego at the Lions Baseball Tournament, going 3-1 in their division. The Tritons played four games, outscoring their opponents 18-8 and recording 34 hits at the plate.
The squad started off the week on a high note, beating Foothills Christian out of El Cajon 3-0. Johnny Coopman and Jon Stone threw a combined no-hitter, the first in program history. Coopman pitched 4.2 innings, facing 16 batters and striking out six. Stone came in for relief in the fourth inning, facing the final seven batters and striking out six. Scout Escobedo and Rowen Gale each collected two hits for the Tritons. Blake Hayes, Johnny Coopman, and Rowen Gale drove in one run for the Orange and Navy.
Day two would be a solid day at the plate for the Tritons as the team scored eight runs, beating Palo Verde Valley 8-2. Johnny Coopman went two for four at the plate, with three RBI's including a triple and a double. Scout Escobedo had a double and three walks, getting on base all four at-bats. Jude Dravecky and Blake Hayes each had two hits and an RBI. Luke Miller opened the game allowing one hit and no runs over two innings. Josiah Miller earned the win, giving up two runs through five innings and striking out four.
Jon Stone started on the mound on Wednesday, throwing 5.2 innings, striking out four, and allowing no runs against the Valley Center Jaguars. The Tritons beat the Jaguars 3-0, earning another shutout. Freshman Carter Canada came in for relief in the top of the fifth, facing six batters and giving up no hits. The Orange and Navy tallied nine hits including two a piece from Coopman, Escobedo, and Hayes. Johhny went two for three with an RBI and two singles. Rowen Gale, John Peterson, and Carter Canada each had a hit.
Day four was a battle for the Tritons, as they picked up their first tournament loss, falling to Chula Vista High School 4-6. Despite outhitting the Spartans nine to seven, the Tritons only scored four runs which was not enough to get the win Thursday afternoon. Scout Escobedo had two hits including a triple scoring two runs. Jude Dravecky had two hits while Blake Hayes had a hit and two stolen bases. The Orange and Navy had a chance in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game up as Carter Canada loaded the bases with a single with only one out, but the Tritons were unable to drive the runners home. Coopman started on the mound, facing 16 batters and pitching four innings, striking out five and giving up two hits.
The Tritons are now 8-6 overall and remain 3-1 in the San Joaquin League. They will host Western Christian on Tuesday, April 8th at 3:30 pm at OCC and will travel to Western Christian on Friday, April 11th for a 3:30 pm start.
