Tritons Defeat Division 6 Garden Grove in Extra Innings

Spring sports are off and running and the Pacifica Christian Baseball team picked up their second win of the season on Thursday against Garden Grove High School. Earlier this week, the Tritons took on Rolling Hills Prep in their season opener, defeating the Huskies 6-0. The Orange and Navy then traveled to take on Garden Grove High School, beating the Argonauts 5-3 in extra innings. Garden Grove, a large public school with over 2,000 students currently sits in Division 6, compared to the Tritons who are in Division 8.

The Tritons are a young team this year, with majority of the roster as underclassmen. The boys got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first, but the Argonauts would come right back adding two of their own in the bottom of the first. The Tritons added one run in the top of the third, and it wasn't until the sixth inning that Garden Grove tied up the game. After seven innings of play, it was all tied up at three a piece, sending the game into extra innings, where the Tritons would score two runs, and shut out the Argonauts, in the bottom of the eighth, winning the game 5-3.

It was sophomore Jon Stone who took the mound for the Tritons, pitching the first four innings, only allowing two runs, and had three strikeouts. Johnny Coopman pitched three innings before sophomore Reed Fry retired the last three batters in the bottom of the eighth. Coopman has been a stud in all areas on the field, both offensively and defensively as he has four hits in two games, three of those for extra bases. Freshman Blake Hayes was three for four at the plate with two stolen bases while freshman Scout Escobedo was two for four with a single and a double. "This was the program's first win against a big school and it shows we can compete against better competition." said Head Coach Chris Gomez "We have a long way to go, but the team is on the right track."

The Tritons have a busy week next week, with four games, three of them on the road. The Orange and Navy have their first San Joaquin League game on Tuesday, February 20th as they travel to Webb at 3:30 pm. The next day they travel to Loara High School in Anaheim for a 3:00 first pitch and then to Pacifica Christian Santa Monica on Saturday, February 25th for a 2:00 pm first pitch.

The 2023-2024 home opener for the Tritons is on Friday, February 24th at 3:15 at OCC.
