Pacifica Christian High School Athletics

Fall Sports 2022 Wrap Up

Pacifica Christian's 2022 fall athletic season was one for the history books. With a strong returning class, veteran coaches, and a contingency of new faces, Triton Nation was ready to compete and represent Pacifica Christian High School on the biggest stages. Below you will find a recap of each program's historic fall season.

Girl's Volleyball

Coming off a 19-11 record in the 2021 season, as well as a CIF-SS Semi-Final appearance and a CIF State Quarterfinal appearance, the squad was ready to build on that momentum heading into the 2022 season. Led by third-year Head Coach Ally Garrett and four-year varsity starter Rebecca Penjoyan, the Lady Tritons did not disappoint. They finished the regular season 21-8, the best winning percentage in program history, secured a 2nd place finish in the competitive San Joaquin League, and qualified for their 5th straight post-season appearance. They also finished the regular season ranked #10 in the final CIF-SS Division 7 Girls Volleyball polls. "It was an incredible and memorable season for the Girl's Volleyball program," said Director of Athletics & Student Life, Brandon Gonzalez. "I could not be prouder of the girls, Coach Ally, and all the parents for their support and dedication this season." Once in the postseason, the Lady Tritons outscored their opponents 12 sets to 2 during the first four rounds of play, including a 3-0 sweep of West Valley High School in the Semi-Finals, the #2 ranked team in the division. The Lady Tritons reached the CIF-SS Finals, ultimately falling to Nordoff High School in a 5-set thriller. They advanced as far as the first round of the CIF State Tournament before losing to Verdugo Hills High School 3-1. Sophomore Chara Wondercheck and Senior Rebecca Penjoyan were awarded 1st Team All-League Honors, Freshman Addie Roberson and Senior Ava Loritz were awarded 2nd Team All-League Honors, and Sophomore Kaelin Rieke earned an Honorable Mention.

Girl's Tennis

Girl's Tennis is the newest fall sport to be added to Triton Athletics. Launched in the spring of 2021, they entered their third season of varsity-level competition and their first year under new Head Coach Don Roberson. Unranked heading into the season, having only two seniors on the team, and joining a new league after losing former league rivals St. Margarets and Sage Hill, no one knew what to expect from the young tennis program. However, under the leadership of Senior Bree Clarke and Juniors Kiana Giunta and Aubrey Callaghan, the Lady Tritons had a record-breaking season. They finished the regular season 15-4—the program's best overall record to date—and secured the first Girl's Tennis League Title in school history, with a 9-1 record in league play. They also produced the San Joaquin League Doubles Champions Bree Clarke and Kiana Giunta, who qualified for the CIF individuals tournament. The team overall finished the year ranked #9 in the CIF-SS Division 4 end-of-the-year polls and advanced to the CIF-SS Finals, the first in the program's history. Senior Bree Clarke and Junior Kiana Giunta were awarded the San Joaquin Girl's Doubles Player of the Year Awards. Junior Aubrey Callaghan and Senior Kayla Babaeain were awarded 1st Team All-League. Sophomore Lexie MacDougall was awarded 2nd-team All-League honors.

Boy's Beach Volleyball

Boy's Beach Volleyball led by another new face in Triton Athletics, Head Coach Evan Fredericks, finished the year 6-2, and ranked #4 overall in the competitive Orange County Beach Volleyball League. Having big wins over JSerra, Crean Lutheran, Orange Lutheran, and volleyball rival CVCS, the Tritons advanced to the OCBVL Quarterfinals before falling to eventual Champions and the #1 ranked team in the country, Newport Harbor High School. "While Boy's Beach Volleyball is not a CIF sport, it is still one of the most popular sports during the Fall Season," said Director of Athletics & Student Life Brandon Gonzalez. "With 40+ boys in the program and three levels, it is great to see the program overall have so much competitive success, top to bottom. I believe our JV team only lost one or two matches all year."

Girl's Golf

Girl's Golf exploded onto the scene this past fall season. Under the guidance of Coach Jeff Anderson, one of two remaining coaches from Pacifica's inaugural year, and led by Junior 1st Team All-League winner Sam Davidson, the Lady Tritons went 9-4 in the regular season and secured a winning record for the first time in program history. Junior Sam Davidson, Senior Nat Ferdi, and Sophomore Kaitlyn Dion all qualified for the San Joaquin League Championships, with Sam Davidson finishing in the top eight to qualify for the CIF-SS Prelims, another first for the program. Kaitlyn Dion and Nat Ferdi were also awarded 2nd Team All-League Honors. Three All-League winners for Girl's Golf was the most in a single season in program history.

Boy's and Girl's Cross Country

Boy's and Girl's Cross Country, guided by 5th-year Head Coach Josh Espinoza, are the final recaps from the fall season. During his tenure, Coach Espinoza has developed two of the top small-school programs in the CIF Southern Section. Both Boy's and Girl's Cross Country qualified for the CIF-SS Prelims, only the second time in school history both programs qualified together. The Boy's program ranked as high as #8 in the CIF Division 5 Boys Rankings this season, the highest ranking the program has ever had. The Boy's and Girl's Cross Country programs had 10 student-athletes recognized with All-League Honors. The Boy's program had two 1st Team All-League Winners in Seniors Ian Cross and Mitch Bahnsen. The Girl's program also had two 1st Team All-League Winners in Sophomores Ashley Gundlach and Akyli Maze. Additionally, the Cross Country Program hosted the Triton Cross Country Invitational held at Crystal Cove State Park. With more than 15 schools participating, and over 150 runners, it is the only High School Cross Country Invitational to be held at a state beach.

Congratulations to all our Fall Sports Student-Athletes and Coaches. Well done, Tritons!
